This is a term used to refer to raping someone who is homosexual to "cure them" of their sexual orientation.We had numerous cases over the years where gays and lesbians are raped to be cured.This is a result of illiteracy among ethnic groups as they frame homosexuality as a sin from religion and cultural point of view.South Africa has one of the most advanced constitutions in the world that protects gays and lesbians.But the media and government are not doing enough to campaign against homophobia by implemanting educational programmes and news stories that will Frame homosexuality in  positive way.People model what they see in the media and if it is framed in a positive way people will end up accepting it.It is about time the media play its part to end the negative stereotypes against homosexuality.

Freedom.

its South African freedom day today (27 April 2012).The freedom charter as proposed by the ANC during the apartheid era promotes equality and freedom for all.The freedom charter does not discriminate against sexuality,race,religion etc.The freedom charter was an ideology proposed to campaign against South Africa injustices during apartheid.One has to argue with the freedom charter,who does it apply to?because despite our history,we still have injustices against social minorities.If we were really a free nation,things like xenophobia,homophobia and other related attacks would not exist.One needs to ask them selves this question "if it is painful when my rights are violated,how does others feel when their rights are violated?"

Moving Forward

In the last few weeks South African representatives launched an extraordinary human rights offensive at the united nation,within the context of growing global debate about the rights of sexual minorities (Mail & Guardian,March 16 2012,Page 14)..It is a good thing that our country is thinking globally and it is promising that South African government  is taking initiative about sexual injustices.But how can we tackle global issues if we still have to first deal with our own injustices?.Arguably we do have our Constitution that is against sexual injustices,but is the application complementing the constitution?

Four men found guilty of killing a 19 year old lesbian have each been sentenced to 18 years in jail..Zoliswa Nkonyana was stabbed and stoned to death in a homophobic attack near Cape Town in February 2006 ( Q News-South Africa-Hate Killers Sentenced-February 21st ,2012 -5:45pm)..This is a wake up call,are you willing to spend 18 years in jail for doing something you could have avoided?.Homophobia is a punishable offence.It helps to know that our justice system is doing something about homophobic attacks,but is it enough?... Read more
